When did it truly begin?
Reader comment on item: Fighting Militant Islam, Without Bias

Did this begin to happen before the attack in 2001 or was it only then? Do we know what make Islamists attack people? I'm not sure I'll ever fully understand the situation, but I would like to have a bit clearer understanding of it.
