In Jerusalem today at least 18 people are dead and more than a hundred wounded after a suicide bombing tore a bus apart on a busy downtown street. Several children were among those killed. Two rival Palestinian Islamist organizations, Islamic Jihad and Hamas, claimed responsibility for the attack. The political consequences were immediate. Israel froze talks on the handover of four West Bank cities to Palestinian control. NPR's Peter Kenyon is in Jerusalem.

PETER KENYON reporting:

The blast was heard in both West and East Jerusalem, and the first eyewitnesses described a gruesome scene. They said the number two bus was severely damaged and bodies and body parts were strewn across the street in a Jewish neighborhood not far from the Mea Shearim ultra-Orthodox neighborhood.

Police described it as a large bomb relatively detonated on board a double-length bus. There was another bus behind that was also damaged. Blood-soaked young children were led into waiting ambulances. Police said an unspecified number of children were among the dead, and some very young children, toddlers, were among the seriously wounded. Baby strollers were found among the wreckage.

More than 130 were also wounded when a Palestinian suicide bomber detonated a five-kilogram device on an Egged No. 2 bus. The terrorists and families have received almost NIS 2.7 million since then.
Sixteen years ago this past Friday, according to the Hebrew date, 23 people were killed – including seven children – and more than 130 wounded when a Palestinian suicide bomber detonated a five-kg. explosive on a no. 2 bus in the Beit Yisrael neighborhood in central Jerusalem, just north of Mea Shearim.

Many of the passengers were returning from praying at the Kotel. The attack happened on the eve of the Hebrew month of Elul, the month leading up to Rosh Hashanah, a time of year when many seek repentance and spiritual renewal.

Six Hamas terrorists were involved in the attack: the suicide bomber, two terrorists who were caught and killed, and three others who were arrested and sent to jail. According to Palestinian Media Watch (PMW), the incarcerated terrorists and the families of the dead terrorists have received a total of NIS 2,692,500 from the Palestinian Authority since 2003

Three killed and more and 17 wounded in two combined attacks in Jerusalem that involved shooting, stabbing and trampling: Since the early hours of Tuesday morning (Tuesday) terrorism has raged again across the country - hitting the capital twice, in a matter of minutes. Following the events, a special cabinet meeting will be convened in the afternoon with the participation of representatives of the security forces.

In an incident that took place around 10:15 in the Armon Hanatziv neighborhood of Jerusalem, two terrorists boarded a bus - with one of them holding a gun and his friend with a knife. The two began firing and stabbing passengers, a Border Police force burst into the bus - shot and killed one of the terrorists. A second terrorist was injured. As a result of the combined terrorist attack, two people aged 60 and 45 were killed, and 17 other people were injured - at least 3 in critical condition. .
In another attack that took place minutes later on Malchei Israel Street in the capital, a terrorist drove a car and hit 3 passengers waiting at a bus stop there. After the crash, the terrorist got out of the car with a knife in his hand - and began stabbing passers-by. In this incident, Rabbi Shaya Krishevsky (59) was killed, and a number of people were injured, some of them in critical condition.
The terrorist who carried out the attack is Alaa Abu Jamal, a Bezeq worker, a resident of East Jerusalem, who carried out the car bombing. Bezeq was quick to condemn the attack and shake off the act: "Bezeq expresses deep shock following the attack on Jerusalem on Malkei Israel Street, and the terrorist activity of the company's employee."

"We are shocked by the criminal act, express disgust at the act, grieve the deep stone of the families of those killed and pray for the speedy recovery of the victims of the attack." Bezeq emphasizes that no early sign was seen, and no change in the employee's behavior was observed, which could have indicated in advance his criminal terrorist activity.

Israeli telecom giant Bezeq sent a statement to its staff on Tuesday, after it was revealed that the perpetrator of a deadly car-ramming and meat-cleaver attack in Jerusalem that morning was a company employee.
"It has come to our attention that a Bezeq employee was responsible for the terrorist attack in Jerusalem this morning in Malchei Yisrael Square. As of now, we have yet to receive all the details, but what is clear is that this is a serious incident. The Bezeq company, for all of its employees, expresses revulsion at this despicable act," the statement read, according to Israeli 0404 news.

The company was responding to an attack by an east Jerusalem man in the Geula neighborhood of Jerusalem on Tuesday that left one man, a local rabbi, dead. The assailant plowed his car onto the sidewalk, ramming two pedestrians, before emerging from the vehicle with a cleaver in hand, to continue attacking his victims. He was shot before he could claim any more lives.
The attack was the latest in a string of more than 30 terrorist attacks against Israelis — mostly stabbings, but also rock-throwing, firebombings and car-rammings — across the country since the beginning of October.
Tuesday's car-ramming attack happened at almost the same time as two Palestinians on a passenger bus armed with a knife and a gun claimed two more victims, bringing the Israeli death toll to seven. Additionally, some 27 Palestinians, including 11 attackers, have been killed since the spike...
