Watch it from 1:20 when Henryk Broder in a burqa is confronted by Turkish teenagers. The video is the same as in my other post.

HB= Henryk Broder, Jew, writes for German paper "Die Welt" dressed in a burqa.

AS=Hamed AbdelSamad, eqyptian Muslim, dressed in bavarian style

I do my best translating:

scene 1: making contact

AS: Der Junge Mann hat eine Frage an dich

B1: Was machen sie? Was soll das sein was sie hier machen?

HB: Wie machen eine Demonstration für religiöse Toleranz.

B1: Ja - für - gegen Islam also.

HB: Nein.

B1: Wenn ich hör im Fernsehen, daß es Verarschung oder so ist, dann schicke ich gleich so richtig viele Massenbeschwerden, ich schwör.

AS (to HB): The young man has a question for you.

B1: What are you doing? What is it supposed to be what you are doing here?

HB: We demonstrate for religious tolerance.

B1: Yes - for - against Islam thus.

HB: No.

B1: If I hear on TV you want to piss me around or something, I go and right away I'll send really many mass-complaints, I swear.

scene 2: religion

B1: Was sind sie für ein Gläubiger?

AS: Ich bin Moslem.

B1: Moslem.

AS: Ja.

B1: und sie trinken Bier?

AS: Ja, alkoholfrei.

B1: Und was sind sie als Gläubiger?

HB: Ich bin Jude.

B1: Jude?

B1: What type of believer are you?

AS: I am a muslim.

B1: Muslim.

AS: Yes.

B1: and you drink beer?

AS: Yes, alcohol-free.

B1: And what believer are you?

HB: I am a jew.

B1: Jew?

scene 3: 911

B1: Der 11.September der war geplant von den Juden, von George Bush und dem Bin Laden. Das war so.

An dem Tag vom 11.September war kein einziger Jude in diesem Haus. ok.

HB: Ja?

B1: Ja eben, das war geplant.

B2: In diesem World Trade Center waren auch Muslime drinnen. Haufenweise Muslime die gestorben sind.

B1: 911 was planned by the Jews, by George Bush and this Bin Laden. That's how it was. On this day, September 11, there was not a single jew in that house. ok.

HB: Yeah?

B1: Yes, right, that was planned.

B2: In that World Trade Center there were also muslims inside. Lots of muslims who died.

scene 4: the burqa

B3: Können sie nicht normal hier rumspazieren?

HB: Ich laufe doch völlig normal rum. Gibt's irgendwo im Koran ein Burka-Verbot für Männer?

B1: Nein, aber

HB: Wisst ihr was, wir sind jetzt eine Stunde rum gelaufen. Kein einziger Deutscher hat sich darüber aufgeregt.

B3: Can't you walk around normal here?

HB: I am walking around completely normal. Is there a burka prohibition for men anywhere in the Koran?

B1: No, but

HB_ You know what, we have been walking around for an hour now. Not a single German got excited about that.

scene 5: she must not

HB: Hast du Schwestern?

B4: (nickt)

HB: Warum sind die nicht hier?

B1: Weil, das, schauen sie mal hier sind soviel Besoffene. Wenn sie jetzt hierher kommen, begrapschen diese Besoffenen, die wissen nicht was die machen.

Wenn meine Cousine oder so hierher kommt, und ich seh sie in einem Zustand - hier offen, oder da offen, sehe dann, gleich nach Hause.

HB: Echt?

B1: Ja.

HB: Darf sie nicht.

B1: Darf sie nicht.

HB: Do you have sisters?

B4: (nods)

HB: Why are they not here?

B1: Because, look around, there are so many drunks. If they come here now those drunks touch her, they don't know what they are doing. If my cousine (female) or so comes here, and I see her in a state dressed like, bare here, or bare there - back home.

HB: Really?

B1: Yes.

HB: She must not.

B1: She must not.

scene 6: virginity

HB: Ihr versteckt eure Schwester.

B1: Ja, Das machen wir natürlich weil wir haben keinen Bock daß sie keine Ehre hat. Die Ehre wird beschmutzt wenn sie entjungfert wird, das ist so. Das ist echt so. Das ätzt. Sie würden doch keine Frau heiraten die keine Jungfrau ist.

HB: Meine Frau war nicht Jungfrau als ich geheiratet habe.

B1: Eben, das ist doch ätzend, oder?

HB: Nö.

HB: You are hiding your sister.

B1: Yes, naturally we do that because we don't fancy she has no honor. Honor is soiled when she loses her virginity, that's the way it is. For real. That sucks. You wouldn't marry a woman who is not a virgin?

HB: My wife was not a virgin when I married.

B1: see, that sucks, doesn't it?

HB: Nope.

This is social control at work. Broder, who could be the Turkish boy's grandfather, does not use his longer life experience or education. He argues on the basis of personal integrity. The Turkish boy openly states his personal position in his family and the greater world around. Where Broder is experienced, the boy is streetwise. Note how he translates religious tolerance into anti-Islam.

A crossing of words, rather than swords develops. I understand this very much as a grandfather-grandson talk which hinges on religious and other beliefs. Imagine an islamist joined the exchange with violent intent. Both, Broder and the boy, would certainly dismiss the islamist with the words "I am not finished with him, we don't need you here". The red lines of respect are drawn already. Extremists no longer fit into either side.
