Democracy takes time to establish

Reader comment on item: Anoush Ehteshami and Democracy in Egypt

Submitted by Joe Six-Pack (United States), Feb 8, 2011 at 12:31

Once established, democracies are hard to kill. However, they take a long time to establish. One year is a political view. In politics, a week is a long time. Political views can be very short sighted.

Well functioning democracies take generations to establish. The French President once said that democracies are cultural in nature. Islamic culture is far from being friendly to democratic ideals.
