If I recall correctly there was/is no such law condemning people to death for leaving Judaism. I never heard that they were to be buried up to their waist or chest so that they couldn't leave. That must be something new after Abraham, after Moses, after Jesus, where in order to stop someone from leaving, they must be buried alive and then murdered with rocks. Kind of like a neighborhood block party. But then again maybe none of them are sinners so they picked up the stone after Jesus commanded that they be sin free to cast.
