Jackson was advised by his lawyers to pay off Chandler to "put the issue to rest" to move on so he could focus on work, as they knew the Chandlers would drag this through court into a media circus, and that even though Jackson's innocence was presumed, this issue had to be "killed" . Jackson reluctantly took his lawyer's advice.
