academia and 9/11

Can you tell me who in academia made any sort of accurate prediction of the truly global threat of Islamic fundamentalism? Or of the fall of communism? As an erstwhile academic, it seemed to me that most of the academic dialogue was spent in arguing over irrelevant points in which people had vested interestrs, but perhaps I am too cynical. Or missed some of the relevant literature. Kissinger was right; the least important points provoke the bitterest conflict, although he said it better
