This would not be the first time that culture and its implications for assimilation have been debated. At the time of the Mexican-American War, there were some who advocated completely conquering Mexico and incorporating it into the US. One argument by those opposed was that Mexican culture was too different and there would be major assimilation problems for so many Spanish-speaking Catholics.
