Cut the aid already - it's good for Israel and America

Reader comment on item: The $36 Billion Bargain: Strategy and Politics in U.S. Assistance to Israel

Submitted by freeman (United States), Jun 9, 2007 at 23:32

Foreign aid to Israel makes Americans resent Israel, makes Israel dependent economically and politically on the US, and stifles the economy. Not to mention the cost to the American taxpayer. Israel will still need to find a way to develop its own system of weapons and not rely on buying it from the US, but this will still be a 1st step. The US and Israel can still remain strong allies.

18 years later and the US still gives aid to Israel. The Soviet threat has declined, and many old time conservatives like Buchanan feel the US no longer has a vested in Israel. But the radical Islamist threat has increased and there is still no moderate Arab ally.

This is coming from a pro Israel Jewish American who isn't leftist.
