Is Assad that stupid?

I can see a Israeli-Syrian confrontation in Lebanon more likely than a straight shoot e'm out in the Golan Heights. Assad has nothing to gain and everything to lose in a direct confrontation. This time, when the IDF has a clear route towards Damascus there will not be a big Russian bear to save them.
