Bush Has Sold Israel Down the River

Reader comment on item: Throwing out the [Arab-Israeli] Rulebook

Submitted by Earl Hartman (United States), Jun 19, 2003 at 20:50

Two states living in peace, side by side.

Fine.

So what does Bush do to advance that noble vision? Does he demand that the Arab terrorists actually stop fighting, agree to recognize Israel as the Jewish state and enter into negotiations in good faith? No, of course not. He sends that Arabist Powell to scold and threaten the Israelis for defending themselves and to beg Abu Mazen to do something, anything, to wheedle Hamas into pretending to stop killing Jewish children for a few days so he can point to some bogus "progress" on the roadmap to "peace" that he can then use as a bludgeon to beat the Jews.

Unless this is just a sop to public opinion, and something else is going on behind the scenes, this is just a sellout and a craven capitulation to terrorism. If that's peace, the heck with it.

If Bush really cares about peace, all he has to do is to stop sucking up to the Arabs, get out of the way, and let Israel do what we have done in Afghanistan and Iraq: pound the terrorists until they beg for mercy and then pound them some more. We invaded and conquered two sovereign nations halfway around the world because, after only ONE terrorist attack, we insisted that we were not going to put up with terrorists killing our citizens with impunity. In the case of Iraq, there wasn't even any real proof that they constituted an immediate threat to us. But we damned world opinion and did what we wanted. Israel has that exact same right, and it is chutzpah of the worst kind for Bush and Co. to say that Israel has no right to defend its citizens in any way it sees fit.

Israel needs to open a total war on the PA and the other terrorists immediately and show them no mercy. Complete destruction of all of the terrorist groups, including the PA, is the only thing that will end this. When the PA and the other terrorist organizations are destroyed and Arafat, Mazen, Rantisi, Yassin and all of the other murderers are dead or on the run, there will be peace.
