Modern Turkey-is it really moderate?

Reader comment on item: A Million Moderate Muslims on the March

Submitted by James Denney (United States), May 16, 2007 at 16:52

Have you read Dr. Speros Vryonis' book, The Mechanism of Catastrophe? It sets out in great detail the pogrom of 1955 in Istanbul by the modern Turks against the remaining Greeks.

What exactly is meant when one uses the term "moderate Turkish Moslem"? If the Turkish state is moderate, secular, and democratic, why did this pogrom occur, and why has the Orthodox religious school not been reopened at Halki? And why does the Turkish government continue to repress the Ecumenical Patriarch, and not admit to the genocides and ethnic cleasings it has perpetrated over the years?
