Reply to Mr. Haqqani: Thank-youReader comment on item: Where's the Muslim Debate? Submitted by john mcginley (United States), May 23, 2003 at 13:48 Dear Mr. Haqqani:thank-you for your remarks. Often the slience of Muslims relative to what is going on in the world under the banner of "Islam" is deafening. From a "Western" democratic perspective the war on terrorism is one of both self-defense and, in the final analysis, survival. But there is a terrible need for a "jihad" from within Islam and for the sake of Islam. It can ONLY come from committed Muslims. The very character, future, and yes, survival of Islam as a great religion is at stake. If the so-far silent majority of Muslims remains silent in the face of the highjacking of this Holy Revelation from God by the faction of nihilistic fear and hatred, then not only will Islam disappear as a great and significant religion. NO. Something worse. God's HOly Revelation will have been thwarted. God's Will is that we humans struggle to implement God's Will. The West cannot win this struggle -- this jihad -- for Islam. The people within Islam will have to make this struggle their own. It will take great courage and perseverance. Your remarks, Mr. Haqqani, make me hopeful that the proper outcome will prevail.
