Mr. Indyk sounds much like a lot of experts in his field. They view the world through rose coloured glasses. Either that or he is lying. Unfortunately, the evidence of Abbas's two-facedness is pretty easy to find. So maybe Mr. Indyk is being disengenuous.

I had witnessed a similar incident the the other day regarding Afghanistan. The expert was adamant that it was in Russia's and Iran's interest to have a stable Iraq.

It didn't seem to enter his line of reasoning that Iran had been at war with the US since 1979 and that anywhere th US is the Iranians might like to impede progress.

Likewise with Russia. The Russians got kicked out of Afghanistan in part because of the US keeping the Afghani rebels supplied with supplies, especially Stinger anti-aircraft misslies. Doesn't anyone think the Russians might just be helping in some way to destabilize the US position in Afghanistan?
