Good article.
A couple of brief comments:
1. There's some question as to whether openly rooting for the other side, as in "We support our troops when they shoot their officers," is a constitutionally guaranteed right of free speech and assembly or whether it's an act of treason. "Treason" is another concept that seems to be in pronounced decline.
2. Part of the decline of interest in the national welfare has been due to the Western doctrine, now almost unassailable, of autonomous individualism. That doctrine postulates no entity as more significant than one's self; hence disinterest in the national welfare.
