The goal of a moderate, democratic, humane Islam is totally impossible.Reader comment on item: My Debate with London Mayor Ken Livingstone Submitted by Carl Goldberg (United States), Feb 2, 2007 at 01:42 Dear Dr. Pipes, In your otherwise excellent speech/debate with Livingstone, you said: Our goal must be, in this case, the emergence of Islam that is modern, moderate, democratic, humane, liberal, and good neighborly. And that it is respectful of women, homosexuals, atheists, whoever else. One that grants non-Muslims equal rights with Muslims. If this is your goal, the we are all doomed, because it is impossible. There are different kinds of Moslems, but there is only one kind of Islam, and it is based on the Koran and the Hadith. The best we can hope for is that the numbers of Muslims-in-name-only, who do not follow the precepts of the Koran and the Hadith and the Sharia, will increase. There is not a shred of evidence that these "moderates" can abolish much of the Koran and the Hadith in order to create the new Islam which you set as a goal. I have no doubt that you are as aware of this as are all the others who have studied Islam -- both Moslems and non-Moslems. I do not understand, therefore, what you hope to gain by pretending that the impossible is possible. This only awakens false hopes and diverts us from mounting a real defense against the Moslem onslaught.
