Would the Qur'an do? In the infamous Q9:29 it says:
1. hatta yu3tuu al-jizya (until they give/pay the jizya)
2, 3An yad. These two words do not have a clear meaning. So much has been written about these two words in the Muslim masora and no one have any clue what they really mean. So much for the Qur'an being Kitab Mubeen or clear book.
Well 3An means upon and yad means hand but it does not make any grammatical sense and it is indeed a puzzle. I understand that Tabari wrote 3 pages about his guess about the meaning of these two single words.
So one can very much guess that Allah is saying to Muslims that ahl al-kitab what ever that is must pay a taz called Jizya but he never expalins how much it is supposed to be, 3An Yad and only Allahu A3lam. Oh the Qur'an the kitab mubeen!
But if the 3Ulama in the 3rd cenutry had no clue what this really means we have one of two choices: Either the Quranic material pre-dates Muhammad and by 632CE no one had a clue what this really means, or the Qur'an was not canonized until the 3rd century but by then no one had a clue what all of this really means. And in either case this detatches the Qur'an from Muhammad and may be even from the Hijaz! So what do you think our dear Mo?
3. wahum saghirun or and they (ahk al-kitab) be-littled.
This single aya was the mother lode for humiliating and taunting of non-Muslims
Now let us read al-Zamakhshari's reading of the above:
"al-Jizya will be taken from them (ahl al-kitab) with belittelment and humilation"
There you go our dear Mo. But wait there is more:
"......al-Dhimmi will come in person, walking and not riding. When al-di=dhimmi pays he shall stand. The Muslim tax collector will be seated. The (tax) collector shall seize him by back of the neck sahke him and say: pay the jizya. And when he pays the jizya he shall be slapped on the bqck of the neck."
There you go our dear Mo. More important Christians and jews were required to dress in certain ways with certain colors that can identify them. We hear of reports in places like Cairo where mobs of Muslim children chasing and throwing stones at Jews and Christians (see Rodeneck).
This taunting became more acute following the Crusades. This makes me wonder should we also ask Muslims to dress in a certain way that can identify them following 9/11! What do you think our dear Mo?
And we do have extant evidence of who was taxed and how much available in the Cairo Geniza records. The dead were taxed and the living were taxed at times at 50% of what they have.
As for the hadith I do not quote it becuse no Hadith can be linked with any great certainty to the Historical Muhammad. In other words: All the hadith is bogus
