Unfortunately, many foreign-policy failures since Truman

Reader comment on item: James Baker's Terrible Iraq Report

Submitted by Sadhasiv (United States), Dec 13, 2006 at 08:15

Since Truman removed McArthur (after the excellent general had advanced to the Yalu), there have been many foreign policy blunders by US:

  1. Eisenhower's overthrow of Mousadegh (and replacement with just-deposed Shah Pahlavi) in 1952--a "no-buy-cott" of Iranian oil would have brought Mousadegh's capitulation quickly, preventing Khomeini's later takeover (and current state of affairs with mad-Ahmedinejad).
  2. Kennedy's ordering murder of Ngo Dinh Diem (and replacement with unpopular Thieu) combined with Democratic Congress' removal of support for South Vietnam.
  3. Biggest blunder of all, Reagan's 1982 rescue of thugocratic Yasir Arafat from Beirut to Tunis (in USAF aircraft at that)
  4. Bush Sr.'s failure to allow Schwartzkopf to do decisive victory (including overthrow of Saddam) in Gulf War--and condemnation of resettling of Samaria/Judea (basically as Baker was SecState then, this was his failure--repeated now with ISG report).
