About political correctness...

As I recall the term "political correctness" was used by Leftists at certain U.S. universities. The term "politically correct" hasn't been around for all that long -- according to some academic sources the term was introduced in the late 80s, early 90s. As I also recall, initially, I didn't think "political correctness" was all that terrible -- it reminded me of someone saying: "now you must be polite! don't forget to say 'please' and 'thank-you!" But it didn't take long for "political correctness" to morph into a stultifying code, inhibiting free speech and thought. (I read one article in which one university now bans "look-ism" -- that means if a student gives what's interpreted as a "dirty look" -- punishment of that student could follow. This is an absurd escalation.)

Second point. To blame Americans for "political correctness" in England is incredibly stupid. I mean, really! As I laugh. Let's blame the Chinese for the invention of gunpowder and all of Europe's wars, shall we? How ridiculous. This is called, btw, the "genetic fallacy." Simply because someone has discovered the origins of idea X (its past history), this in no way enables the person (that's raheel) to condemn or praise the idea based on how the idea is currently being practiced. Ok?

Next. The manner in which PCness (that's political correctness) is manifested in Europe is qualitatively different from the way in which PCness manifests itself in the States. In the States, it's an annoyance (but it's usually overcome -- there's healthy debate, differrent opinons are published, etc.). In Europe it's a full-fledged disease. Just listen to the British cops after the bombing on the buses or the Mayor of London or the BBC. That Islamists can do no wrong is the 11th commandment (and, conversely all evil lies with the States/Israel). This is also routinely picked up here in Canada (now who shall I blame -- the brits or the yanks? I'm joking.) PCness in Canada is particularly rampant at the CBC -- you can't even call "terrorists" "terrorists" (might offend Muslims.) There are many, many other examples here in Canada -- and it's beyond, far beyond, a mere annoyance -- it's a form of suppression of free speech.
