My "Crusade"Reader comment on item: Jihad: The Fight Over Meaning Submitted by B Kostynuik (Canada), Jun 7, 2002 at 11:59 Let's not fool ourselves and let's certainly not let those who seek to undermine what we see with our own eyes attempt to do worse. The great twist presented by Dr. Hathout's accusation towards any non-believer who dares use freedom of speech to define Islam, let alone extremely well-informed freedom of speech, is typical. Apparently, only a Muslim can comment on Islam and in reality, believers have no right to debate. The definition of jihad by an infidel is heresy, at best. As for our Western collective and individual "crusade" for clean water, air, socks etc., the word HAS a multitude of meanings since the "holy war" meaning. Our culture is soaking in those examples. "Jihad" may mean other things than "holy war" just as "fatwah" may mean something else than a death sentence for Salmon Rushdie. Excellent work, Dr. Pipes.
