Reader comment on item: NATO Fights the Jihadis

Submitted by michael c (United Kingdom), Oct 3, 2006 at 13:29

Unfortunately the first NATO/islam battle seems to have been poorly conceived in Afghanistan. There seems to be a tendency for NATO generals to fall for 'social work' rather than fighting. Canadian troops were shot whilst handing out 'candies' to children. British troops attempt to win 'hearts and minds' with development and poppy eradication programmes, whilst getting talked into the disasterous 'platoon houses' deployment by Karzai.

NATO needs to fight to win, not behave like nonces or social workers or agricultural police. German troops need to remember to carry bullets as well. The culture needs to be changed, so do the generals.

The idea of an expanded NATO is sound, as is the exclusion of non-democracies from the UN! what a joy that would be!
