Reader comment on item: Palestinians Who Cling to Israel
in response to reader comment: Response to Donald W. Bales

Submitted by Donald W. Bales (United States), Jul 29, 2006 at 22:19

Was it ever an independent country?

It was under the Ottoman Turks until the end of World War I. It was under a British Mandate until 1948 when israel was established. The Arabs had the West Bank or could have had-but they rejected it. It became part of Jordan. The Golan Heights were part of Syria. The Gaza was part of Egypt.

Have not there been Jews in Palestine from ancient times?
And many more migrated there from countries where they had been persecuted.
