response to VictorReader comment on item: PBS, Recruiting for Islam Submitted by GadFly (United States), Dec 17, 2002 at 22:35 Victor seems to think that it's the producers "editorial perogative" to ommit "the current critical thought of Mohammad's life" from their pseudo-documentary of Mohammad. The ommissions go far beyond exercising mere "stylistic option" when salient FACTS about Mohammad's life are left out. It's no secret that he was militaristic and intolerant. The Koran and Hadith are packed with examples of his brutality, a brutality that Muslims take as the model for Godly behavior, and a brutality starkly at odds with Judeo-Christian beliefs. Ommitting references to the ugly side of Islam, and presenting the result to an audience that is unlikely to realise ommissions have been made, is inexcusable, blatant propaganda. As for the contention that PBS is practicing it's First Amendment rights, rubbish. True, they can say what they want, but not on MY dime. More importantly, PBS is ignoring the neccessary corrollary to freedom of speech; honesty of argument. The "right" to tell lies does not protect or enhance liberty, but erodes it. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
