Reader comment on item: PBS, Recruiting for Islam

Submitted by Oskar Klausenstock, M.D. (United States), Dec 17, 2002 at 17:25

Bravo, Mr.Pipes!

The PBS show extolling Muhammad, and by proxy the entire world of Islam, is basically an extension of the recent preoccupation with Islam in general. Most schools, private and public, have introduced courses about the nature of Islam, courses that never existed before...as if September Eleventh had been a wake-up call to our ignorance and must be somehow corrected.

In my conversation with those who took the course, it occurred to me that the "new revelation"isless an enchantment with a new faith than a new anti-Americanism, many of our intellectuals being in the vanguard. Tenured professors, publicity-raving journalists, disenchanted writers and the like, speaking the loudest. Socialism has lost its alluring face of Nirvana and we must now search for a new one. Our free society is a natural breeding ground for dissent. It has been that way since our birth.

I wouldn't want it otherwise. My only fear is the stifling of voices in opposition. And that is why I welcome your writing.

Oskar Klausenstock M.D.
