Edward Said's public appearance
Reader comment on item: The Harassing of Noam Chomsky

Submitted by Ted Charak (United States), May 23, 2006 at 20:07

Some time in 1999/2000 Edward Said spoke at University of Chicago's Mandel Hall to a full house of 1000 people. Rashid Khalidi was also present; along with other prominent Arabs from the Chicago community. Edwards Said topic was his recently published autobiography, My Beautiful Old House. This event occurred after the expose written by J. R. Weiner in Commentary magazine. The event was attended by several Jewish activists who went to evaluate the crowd's reception. We did not create any disturbance whatsoever. But what is more important. There were no police present or security checking of the sort described by Noam Chomsky.
