Reader comment on item: Symposium: Turkey: The Road to Sharia?
in response to reader comment: Algerian Genocide

Submitted by Levent (Turkey), Jan 16, 2006 at 15:05

Actually you will find that whereas France has a law that requires that its colonial history is taught in a positive light, Turkey has for years been saying while it disputes Armenians version of events this should be left to historians and have been trying to organise an international convention of historians but Armenia refuses to attend. And why should they attend and have it publicised they after centuries of living in peace with them they joined European forces that came to destroy us and were deep into Anatolia before they met any sort of response when they can have ignorant Europeans bleating "Armenian genocide, Armenian genocide' without knowing the first or last thing about it. As for Kurdish separatists, the EU has been harbouring them for decades before they finally and belated added them to their list of terror organisations. It took 30,000 lives to do it but your governments got there in the end. Perhaps the people under those governments, such as yourself, will eventually catch up too.

Incidentally, do you even care that Armenia currently occupies a large part of Azerbajain and has ethnically cleansed that region of 800,000 Azerbaijanis during the last decade while you screamed "Armenian genocide" about something that happened when the Republic of Turkey did not even exist, or is your moral outrage entirely manufactured and directed as it suits you?

Do you care that Austria, a country where neo-nazi candidates frequently win elections, has just taken over the presidency of the EU, your precious beacon of light and freedom? Or does it worry you more that their first order of business is to bring in Croatia, a country that just last decade took part in the slaughter of Bosnian muslims along with their enemies, the Serbs?

Lets get to the crux of this - Turkey being in or not has NOTHING to do with standards - frankly, the EU has none; on any point you can find to criticise Turkey umpteen counter examples can be brought up for EU member states - for politicians it is about voting rights. They resent even the UK for not giving up their NATO leanings so the last thing they want is another big NATO player with sufficient voting rights to counter the Franco/German pact. These politicians will not come out and say this - calling us a trojan horse for NATO is not as scary as calling us a trojan horse for radical Islam, so they play on your bigotry. And when you seek to play on Europe's bigotry at the moment you have almost unlimited capital; they have it in abundance, as demonstrated on boards like this.
