I am not an expert in Israeli politics, but the more I learn about it and Mr. Sharon, the more I respect him. To my opinion, he combines moral principles with common sense and practical approach, rare qualities in a politician (we all know that politicians tend to be below the average citizen morally, and often intellectually as well). Also, his actions are underlined by care for the distant future of his country, while almost all other politicians in democracies do not think in perspective of more than 4-5 years, the re-election term.
Somebody here wrote that Sharon "led Jews down the path of self-delusion". I would ask, what about his opponents? They seem to think that if Israel endures to occupy "the Territories" for another 5 or 10 years, one beautiful morning the Palestinians will awaken transformed in a magic way. They will decide to pack and go somewhere else, or will be eager to become loyal citizens of Israel devoted to peaceful work and education of their children (which will be on average 1.8 per family), or will build a democratic state offering citizenship and all civil and cultural rights to Jewish settlers. Is it Mr. Sharon who is in delusion, or those who imply such science-fiction alternatives?
