Reader comment on item: [Hedayet and] Border Agencies in Denial

Submitted by Rabbi Dr. Ilana Rosansky (United States), Oct 16, 2002 at 11:15

"...At a time when Americans are watching corrupt business executives being hauled off in handcuffs, should anything less await an INS staff responsible for allowing into the country the murderers of their fellow citizens?"

Picking up on the above in today's article: Are you aware that if your US passport is stolen abroad, you can immediately report it to the local police and go the the US consulate for a replacement, BUT, if your passport (and your entire fanny pack with driver's licence and etc...) is stolen off the converyor belt at Logan Airport, no one wants to take a report, and the Federal Government only has a provision for reporting a stolen or lost passport when you fill out form DS-64 upon applying for a new passport (which you cannot do without a driver's license and birth certificate, which can take weeks to obtain). Do you know that there is no 800 number or hot-line to call the Feds and immediately report your passport stolen???

Did you know that if you actually make a separate trip and go back to Logan Airport to fill out a report with the State Police, they do not want to know about it. And when you say to the desk sergeant, "aren't you the least bit concerned that a US Passport was stolen at Logan and has potentially been in circulation for over a week?" that the desk sergeant will answer: "Well, I didn't lose it!" And I am referring to September, 2002 !!!
