An Idea That Will Be A Difficult Sell To Americans

Reader comment on item: Two Germans vs. Islamism

Submitted by Seamus MacNemi (United States), Jan 4, 2006 at 13:17

While the idea of electronic tags to identify and track terrorists and potential terrorists may be a very good and practical idea, I do not think it will sell well with Americans. Given the already controversial situation with the Office of Homeland Securitys wire tapping of suspected terrorists, one can easily imagine the hue and cry by organizations like the ACLU and other civil rights groups if such a method was to be in any way implemented here in America. I think it highly possible that any such move would be determined by the courts to be unconstitutional and therefore against the law.

It is the notion of freedom peculiar to Americans that hampers any attempt we make to protect ourselves from the hostile activities of individuals or organizations within the country, especially when some of these individuals or organizations may be citizens or comprised of citrizens.

I do, however, think that such methods should be considered as viable within context provided certain safe guards are in place to maintain the intergrity of the constitution and its effects on the lives of ordinary citizens.
