The Europeans are being led by committed "Multiculturists". These leaders are ideologues who believe that the influx of Muslims will become the synthesis of "Eurabia". It is not the populations that chose to deconstruct Europe, but an elite cadre of academics, Maxists, leftists, and others who made the decision.

This decision was based on the fact that Europe had been the locus of two world wars, and that Europe united and borderless would have a salutory effect and prevent more wars. The sacrifices would be the deconstruction of "Old" Europe and the Brave New World of a world without borders. The unintended, or perhaps ignored, threat is and was Islam. Not just "Radical" Islam, but the culture of Islam per se, is incompatible with western democracy. Interesting experiment, but potentially fatal to western civilization. It does make one wistful for a world without Islam.
