Sharon and the Peace Process.
Reader comment on item: The Gods and the Arab-Israeli Conflict

Submitted by Phil Horn (United States), Dec 15, 2005 at 21:04

What would you have Sharon and Bush do? Nothing?

I call your attention to the changed nature of Israel's relationship to much of the Arab world as a result of the disengagement from Gaza. Would Sylvan Shalom have been admitted, much less receive so warm a reception, in Tunisia? Would Saudi have taken Israel off its embargo list? Would Dakar have permitted El Al flights to land? And the list goes on.

How could Israel elect a Prime Minister who would not dedicate himself to finding a peaceful solution to the conflict? Israel has had only two such prime ministers: Shamir who grudgingly advanced the peace process with his participation in Madrid and Golda whose inertia helped create conditions for the Yom Kippur War.
