What if the conventional wisdom of our leaders is wrong on Turkey?Reader comment on item: Is Turkey Going Islamist? Submitted by alan (United Kingdom), Oct 18, 2005 at 08:38 The conventional wisdom used to stream-roller Turkey's entry to E.U. is:-1.) Turkey is becoming more secular, not more Islamist 2.) Turkey in E.U. means a safer, more free Europe than Turkey outside E.U.; 3.) Turkey is militarily useful as N.A.T.O. member. These 'arguments' are suspect. To comment on each in turn:- On 1.) above, as Daniel Pipes observes, this argument is not convincing; on 2.) above, this depends on 1.); on 3.)above, this reflects Cold War thinking. For an intelligent, even-handed analysis, go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki, then type in: 'accession of Turkey to the European Union'.
