The place of Israel in this debate

Reader comment on item: What If the United States Had Not Invaded Iraq

Submitted by andy (United States), Sep 30, 2005 at 15:37

When talking about the positive and negative aspects of our war in Iraq, what part does the survival of Israel play in the scenario. I see that much of our problem with Europe and Arab countries is our long standing support, friendship, and attempts at protecting Israel.

Was our going after Saddam an effort, at least in part, to stop the build up of his military for an attack on Israel? We knew that Iraq was the only country with a strong military that could and probably would release it's army on Israel.

It is clear that Europe is indifferent to the suffering Israel has experienced from terror and open attacks, and with a growing Islamic influence is sounding more like pre-Nazi Germany. Of course, the Arab nations hate Israel and long for this tiny nation's annihilation. This has most certainly affected our relationship with both Europe and Arab states.

Recently, our president was influential in convincing Israel to give up Gaza for peace. I believe this was a great mistake on many fronts. The Arab states are not interested in peace with Israel but in it's elimination and removal from the area.

So, I ask a question in response to your question, "What if the United States had not invaded Iraq"? I ask "What if we turn our backs on Israel; what impact politcally, militarily, theologically, etc will this have on us?
