Israel's Academic Extremists

Solomon Socrates

Middle East Quarterly, 2001

One day, when historians scratch their heads and wonder just how Israel could have adopted the policies it did in the the Oslo era of the 1990s, they will likely devote considerable attention to the role of the country's academics. In amazement, they will look back on how a number of radicals actively legitimated the agenda of the country's enemies, thereby doing much to demoralize their fellow nationals. https://www.meforum.org/87/israels-academic-extremists

Neve Gordon: Loses court case claiming he'd been defamed

An appeals court in the Israeli town of Nazareth overturned an earlier lower-court ruling that had awarded a legal victory to Neve Gordon, a far-Left Israeli lecturer in political scientist at Ben-Gurion University in Beersheba. Gordon had filed a SLAPP suit in that court against Prof. Steven Plaut, a prominent columnist and academic economist, based on articles Plaut had published denouncing Gordon's political opinions and public political activities. Plaut is a critic of Israel's radical academic Left and is associated with websites that monitor it, including www.isracampus.org.il.

SLAPP stands for "Strategic Lawsuit against Public Participation." In many parts of the United States there are serious penalties for filing SLAPP suits, but to date none in Israel.

In particular, Plaut had censured Gordon for repeatedly endorsing the views and writings of Prof. Norman Finkelstein, recently fired by DePaul University in Chicago, and even comparing him to the biblical Prophets. Finkelstein, a fawning admirer of the Hezbollah terror organization, is a favorite of neo-Nazis like Ernst Zundel. Commentary senior editor Gabriel Schoenfeld has condemned his "crackpot ideas, some of them mirrored almost verbatim in the propaganda put out by neo-Nazis around the world" (Commentary, January 2001, p. 20). Plaut had also slammed Gordon for illegally entering Ramallah to interfere with Israeli military operations, describing Gordon's "human shield" group as "Judenrat wannabes." On February 3, 2002, Israel's ynet reported (in Hebrew, with photo) that "250 left-wing activists violated the Israeli army's orders and entered Ramallah for a meeting with [Yasser] Arafat. . . . Neve Gordon . . . was photographed with Arafat with hands clasped . . . ." http://historynewsnetwork.org/roundup/entries/48109.html

Borderline View: A self-imposed boycott The sort of boycott that BGU's Neve Gordon called for in an LA Times op-ed is ineffective and unethical.

By David Newman August 23, 2009 21:05 My colleague at Ben-Gurion University, Dr. Neve Gordon, has made headlines during the past few days as a result of an opinion piece he wrote for the Los Angeles Times (reprinted in the Guardian, with excerpts at the bottom of this page) calling for an international boycott of Israel to be accompanied by disinvestment. It is with a sense of deja vu that I write this column. I work in the same department as Dr. Gordon and despite our close and collegia https://www.jpost.com/opinion/columnists/borderline-view-a-self-imposed-boycott

THE ASSOCIATES OF HERR ZUNDEL by Steven Plaut http://www.think-israel.org/plaut.zundel.html

Studying with Prof. Neve Gordon at the University of Michigan

By Jacob Shrybman August 25, 2009 In a lecture on November 14th, 2007 Gordon told the class that he wasn't interested in giving an unbiased academic history of the Arab-Israeli conflict.. Gordon then welcomed a question from a student who claimed Iranian President Ahmadinejad's denial of the Holocaust was "not a big deal." .. In a lecture on November 5th, 2007 Gordon continuously used the term "Jewish roads" to refer to Israeli roads in the West Bank and formerly in the Gaza Strip from which Arabs are excluded. An Israeli student in the large class raised his hand and told Gordon that he was offended by his phraseology and said Gordon was bordering on anti-Semitism by deeming these roads "Jewish roads." The student described for the class the complete freedom of movement of Israeli Arabs (Arabs with Israeli citizenship) on Israeli roads inside Israel and inside the West Bank. Therefore by calling the roads "Jewish" and not Israeli Gordon was being anti-Semitic. Gordon again simply disregarded the challenge to his biased teaching and appeared irritated. The same Israeli student that challenged Gordon received a terse email after class that same day from Gordon requesting that the student come see him at his office at an appointment two days later. The student arrived at Gordon's office and was surprised to see his Graduate Student Instructor (who directly grades the student) present as well. The student cordially greeted Gordon in Hebrew but did not receive the same warm greeting in return. Gordon then proceeded to berate the student for publicly embarrassing and offending him during class. He belittled the student by telling him that he (Gordon) had been teaching for longer than the student20had been alive and that he had never been embarrassed and offended like that before. Behind closed doors, intimidated by his professor yelling at him, and in the presence of the person who decides his grade, the student quickly apologized and hoped the matter was put to rest. Much to the student's dismay, in the next lecture Gordon attempted to clear his name and denounced the student's challenging questions as unfair and unfounded, while publicly humiliating the student. Gordon's Graduate Student Instructors further dissected the Israeli student's challenge in the class discussion sections, and referred to the student by name without his consent. Along with the history of scare-tactics used by Prof. Gordon in order to keep his classroom opposition quiet and disallowing any challenging of his anti-Israel positions... https://israelbehindthenews.com/2009/08/25/studying-with-prof-neve-gordon-at-the-university-of-michigan/ Signed a petition advocating for the release of terrorist supporter Darin Tator https://knowbdsinisrael.com/lecturers/neve-gordon/

LA Times Provides Platform for "Boycott Israel" Call by Radical Neve Gordon | CAMERA Aug 21 2009 At the height of the second Intifada, shortly after two reservists were brutally lynched by a Palestinian mob after unwittingly straying into Ramallah, Gordon (together with Yigal Bronner) wrote a letter to Ha'aretz blaming the failure of the Camp David negotiations — and the subsequent Palestinian violence — on Israel. Defending Arafat's rejection of Israel's vast concessions, the writers argued the Israeli government understands only force. And in March 2002, when Israel was suffering from a wave of Palestinian suicide attacks and unprecedented terrorism, Neve Gordon was working with Palestinians to dismantle Israeli roadblocks meant to keep attackers out of Israeli cities. He supports and defends Holocaust minimizer and Hezbollah supporter Norman Finkelstein. (See here and here.) It is no wonder that Neve Gordon's writings have been posted on anti-Semitic and neo-Nazi sites https://www.camera.org/article/la-times-provides-platform-for-boycott-israel-call-by-radical-neve-gordon/

45 lecturers sign petition condemning Gordon's 'Boycott Israel' article

By JPost.com Staff

SEPTEMBER 9, 2009 23:19 Some 45 lecturers at the Ben-Gurion University in Beersheba signed a petition initiated by the 'Im Tirzu' movement condemning an article written by Dr. Neve Gordon, who teaches political science at the university, in which he called on the world to boycott Israel, Army Radio reported on Wednesday night. Gordon betrayed his position as an academic whose work is funded by tax money, the petition redportedly states, adding that the op-ed, which was published in the Los Angeles Times in August, made cynical use of academic freedom and freedom of speech. The university's administration has harshly criticized Gordon's position. https://www.jpost.com/breaking-news/45-lecturers-sign-petition-condemning-gordons-boycott-israel-article
