Even in academia and in a company of experts, a true & reasonable view could be hushed away by these sordid means; a conspiracy of silence, hidden incentives to hew to a certain orthodoxy & penalties on dissenting, enabled by outside actors with an agenda, etc.

The problem isn't just limited to the Middle Eastern studies, I imagine.
