Reader comment on item: The End of Treason

Submitted by Anthony Dayton (Canada), Aug 16, 2005 at 18:03

If there is no longer the idea of treason, then there is no longer the idea of an intact political entity. During Viet Nam, for example, open protest against the government was a healthy sign of democracy, but the protest was - for many - defined in terms of a conflict between what the United States was or should be, and how it was behaving during the war. This only converts to treason when the protest is agasint the very existence of the United States itself.

If a country cannot defend its existence, ultimately it will cease to exist. I would think that now, more than ever, treason should be resurrected and enforced.
