Citizens of the WorldReader comment on item: The End of Treason Submitted by Pat (United States), Aug 16, 2005 at 16:44 I believe John Walker Lindh plea-bargained his way out of a treason charge. That happens in a democracy with rule-of-law. It doesn't happen in an Islamic dictatorship, or under any other autocratic regime. We have freedom of speech and not every act of dissent is treasonous. How do you distinguish between lawful protests and "giving aid and comfort", unless that aid is material in nature? If there is another terrorist attack in the US and we learn that an American citizen or an alien (even if it's a reporter) knew it was going to happen and did nothing, that person should definitely be charged with treason. If that doesn't happen, then treason truly will be obsolete. Unfortunately, we are on our way to world government and those who see themselves as enlightened also see national borders as anachronisms. That is most evident in Europe. More than anyone else, Europeans are closest to becoming citizens of the world. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
