ResponseReader comment on item: Advice to Non-Muslim Women against Marrying Muslim Men Submitted by T (United Kingdom), Jan 28, 2019 at 08:46 I'm glad concerns regarding the safety and well being of women in abusive, manipulative relationships have been raised, whether cross cultured or otherwise. It's important to speak honestly about the differences in cultures and expectations of men and women. It is true that double standards exist and sexism and abuse of women takes place more often than is spoken about. These are so serious and women need other women to explain the possible risks but this piece states the actions of Kurdish men as though most share all of these traits and action's. This is absolutely not true. There are certainly some behaviour's and beliefs commonly shared in the culture of Kurdish men but Kurdish culture and beliefs are very varied. Kurdistan covers a huge area within several several 'countries.' In some parts there is an honour system. In others there is not. Some families rear their children with lack of regard and respect for girls and women. Others do not. Entering into relationships where the roles and expectations of men and women are very different is vital to understand. It's easy to become involved in something that is not what we thought it was and if you don't learn about these issues and your own reasons for entering into the relationship, it can leave you in a very vulnerable position. It's important to understand as well, that you'll start a relationship from a very different position than your new partner if they are seeking asylum. Many men too are also vulnerable and yes, there is a higher risk that a woman will be used so the man, who may believe (wrongly I may add) he'll achieve the safety of getting leave to remain. It's not always the case that the men are abusive but they may be desperate. What a person has lived through in their home country and on the journey to this country could well be traumatic. They too are adapting to something completely alien, often with little UK language skills and certainly no comprehension of the UK system or culture. New rules and a bit of madness usually occurs. I don't excuse anyone for abusing women. I just want to widen the conversation to include relevant information. I know some men aren't coming to the Uk because they have had to flee for safety and some truly don't care about women. I have knowledge and experience of similar to that. However, as well as the warnings given here, I have other positive experiences. I know several Kurdish men who do not share the qualities or beliefs that were put in this piece. They aren't involved in criminal activity, etc etc.I know men who have huge respect for women and I am lucky now, that I have those people in my life. They bring many aspects of kurdish culture that I and our friends love and value. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
