Reader comment on item: Two Weaknesses Could Undo the Islamist Movement
in response to reader comment: Counter-Ideology A Key Weapon

Ibrahim misses the fact that our Western democracies are crashing. We may have a proud history, but we actually have little to be proud of, now. And that is the important point.

History, in politics, is just propaganda.
Ever hear a politician cite history contrary to his agenda?
We're not going to sell Islam on Western Culture until we get some of it back.

This is where Putin is brilliant. He's pushing Russian Machismo and that is something Muslim's might respect.
As for the Reformation, the analogy is a good one, provided we remember that the governance in Europe was a lot sloppier than today, religion and politics were deeply intertwined, and that 'Luther's Armies' didn't stop marching until the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648.

I think we're in for a long haul.
