police lets islamists patrol The Hague during New Year's Eve

Reader comment on item: The Danger of Partial No-go Zones to Europe

Dutch paper "De Telegraaf" follows the story how the city council endorses islamist patrols during New Year's Eve. I translate some paragraphs:

http://www.telegraaf.nl/binnenland/24924409/__Ordedienst_salafisten_verworpen__.html

A majority in parliament is strongly critical of the city The Hague. The seat of government (Amsterdam is the capital) ought not to deploy salafists to keep order, judge the MPs. This paper revealed yesterday that the police receives help from the ultra-orthodox As-Sunna-mosque during New Year's Eve in order to keep it calm in two parts of The Hague's Schilderwijk neighborhood.

The Hague Police had said in an earlier reaction that the collaboration is "nothing new" and that volunteers are not given any special special authority. Questions about criticism from parliament were not answered.

Here's today's follow up:

Ophef over ordetroepem Haagse Schilderswijk

Salafisten gaan toch patrouilleren

Alexander Bakker

Volunteers from the ultra-orthodox as-Sunna-mosque will patrol The Hague's Schilderswijk neighborhood during New Year's Eve regardless of all political unrest. That follows from a declaration of the council. The mosque's council write that for the fith consecutive year

they assume "religious, moral, and social responsibility".

It follows from offical papers the mayor of The Hague had not informed the city council about the collaboration. On paper Van Aartsen (the mayor) only writes about "activities of residents organised by responsible residents, ranging in diversity from clean-up activities to neighborhood surveillance."

Some background from me here. Some Dutch cities, including The Hague, suffer from a tradition of burning cars during New Year's Eve. As far as I know nobody does this in Germany. The Dutch news usually report the numbers on New Year but would never mention how these criminal acts are specific to The Netherlands and do not happen in other Western European countries. I have a feeling this is not a muslim problem. However, the as-Sunna mosque exploits the opportunity to demonstrate that Sharia provides law-and-order where Dutch law cannot.
