I don't believe a solution to the crisis is as straight forward as you have suggested. If the U.S. did as you propose it would unite the Arabs even more in their anti-U.S. bias and would cause them to use the "oil weapon against us." I fear that anti-Israeli sentiment in the U.S. would then multiply as another oil embargo is set in place and an anti-Semitic backlash here would make that in Europe pale in comparison.
