Technically speaking Mahr is either unfair or badReader comment on item: Advice to Non-Muslim Women against Marrying Muslim Men Submitted by Prashant (United States), Jul 26, 2015 at 00:44 Dear Dr Pipes, Your reader Rehanna from Ecuador mentioned about Islamic marriages in glowing terms. In particular, she mentioned the virtues of Mahr. Mahr is a one-time payment that a man offers to a woman at the time of their marriage. Mahr becomes the property of the woman and is supposed to provide her financial security for life. In today's times Mahr may be an outdated concept for many reasons. If it is indeed supposed to provide financial security to a woman for life, it will need to be substantial. Assuming that the man entering marriage is young and honest, how can he be expected to come up with any substantial amount of money at such an early stage of his life? In other religions/cultures, Mahr is paid over a life time when both partners in a marriage work to provide financial security to each other over a life timelong period of time. Mahr, being a one time payment, would either become a token unsubstantial payment or would put serious financial burden on the groom. In either case it should not be mentioned as a virtue. Ancient religious customs need not be examined using modern lenses but, unfortunately, Islamic customs are supposed to have come strainght from God and need to be true for all time to come. I wonder if Allah considered the argument mentioned here while instituting Mahr for all time to come? Is there something that I am not understanding here? Submitting....
