Nice thoughtsReader comment on item: Advice to Non-Muslim Women against Marrying Muslim Men Submitted by Amy (United States), Apr 2, 2015 at 21:40 "when it comes to decision making the mothers and family understand that their daughters and sons will have their own life" This is a western ideal. Egypt is not the only culture in the world who sees it differently. In many countries and regions the newly married couple is viewed as part of a larger family unit, with attached rights and duties, and it is not a value that they 'have their own life'. The west grows up with one way, the east grows up another, and I wouldn't necessarily label them as inherently wrong or right. There are wrong and right ways to both approaches, to be sure. "do you think a 45 year old man should tell his wife to clean the entire house of his mother out of respect?" I think it's fair to subtley suggest it, but I think it's even more reasonable that a daughter in law offer without the suggestion. Even here in the US, when families get together for holidays, the younger women offer to help the older women with cooking and cleanup. If an older parent is physically limited, they offer to do even beyond that. But if a husband demands it, or shames his wife for not understanding why it may be important- yes i think that would be insensitive of him. I believe Arab husbands should be just as broadminded about the cultural differences as a western wife would be. "it helped that you're a Western woman that his family made them accept your situation" Actually, many Egyptian families aren't just eager to accept a western daughter in law. There are concerns, especially among the more conservative ones, about her true religious values or morality. There is a lot of stigma if a son marries a woman with kids or who has been married before, whether she is egyptian or not. "why not try to live in egypt for a quite of time so you will have a better knowledge of the culture" I would absolutely love to do that. I actually even tried- I asked my employer to work remotely for the rest of this year, but he only approved a month. So that's the most I will get for now. "i don't think any women deserved to be put on those situation after living and investing a lot of feelings for so many years, some just disappeared without a trace" It happens everywhere, with all kinds. People do crazy things. One of my cases was a woman whose husband divorced her for someone else after 40 years, no explanation. There is no sure fire guarantee that marriage will last, because people can and do change. "i am hoping for the success of your marriage, at your age and for the sake of the kids, you need a man and they need a father figure" Fortunately, both of my exes do have regular time with my kids. I don't know how much they need a father figure, although I think the more caring people any child has in their lives- the better off they are. I personally don't think I needed a man- I was doing fine without one- but I can admit that life sure is a lot more vibrant when you're sharing it with one!
