Strange logic thereReader comment on item: Advice to Non-Muslim Women against Marrying Muslim Men Submitted by Amy (United States), Mar 2, 2015 at 23:14 Cleo, some of the things you are saying seem very far out. Do muslims not divorce in Australia? I married my first husband when I was 21, before I even knew what islam was. I was at that time a very devout Christian. I divorced at the age of 26. The divorce brought on a process of reevaluating my beliefs and perceptions, at which time I met my second husband and was introduced to sufism. I married my second husband when I was 27, and became muslim soon after. My second husband was also an American convert. We were married over 10 years and as I said divorced last spring. What seems so fishy to you about that? Maybe some eastern cultures look down on divorce, and it rarely happens, but as a westerner with two western exes that doesn't seem so unusual as to somehow discredit me. My current husband did marry first in his late 20s. This is the norm for egyptian men these days as the cost of marrying is outrageous. His first wife was some years older than her and had health issues that prevented a pregnancy, among other things. He was married a couple of years then divorced, and remarried late in 2012. Most of his second marriage was long distance, and when they began living together it became clear to both it wasn't going to work out and they mutually agreed to split before children were a serious thought. Both his exes are westerners. Yes my husband worked in government for 10 years starting from his very early 20s. He transitioned out of that and became more entrepreneurial. He owns his own business now, and is working on expanding it. Yes, rare, as you said- but there are highly motivated and intelligent men still around. The whole bit about my name is simply ridiculous. The only time I ever hear that being made an issue is with Pakistanis. Name change is not a requirement at conversion, and those who know their deen are aware of that. Would you like to call me by something islamic? My ex sometimes introduced me as jamilah, you're welcome to use that if you like. But living in a place where everyone else who is NOT muslim (coworkers, family, etc) knows me already as Amy, why would I change it? Your post shows how much misconception there really is about islam. The whole thing about names and divorces, totally off the mark- sorry.
