long term exposure to abuse in TurkeyReader comment on item: Advice to Non-Muslim Women against Marrying Muslim Men Submitted by Istanbul (United States), Oct 2, 2014 at 10:04 Hi all. I just thought I should post this for the ones who are or were in an abusive relationship (whether it be physical or emotional, or both). I understand the effects of being in an abusive environment for I had lived through it when I was in Istanbul, Turkey; I experienced it all: street harrassments (intimidation, groping, name calling, etc.), physical abuse (slapping, choking, concussion, rape), monetary abuse (withholding my finances and refusing to let me go), name calling (bitch, slut, retard, etc.), refusing social interactions (being locked up, rules about who you can or cannot see, etc.), humiliation (scolding in public, making his family and friends think you are the culprit, etc.), blaming ("you made me do it")... the list goes on and on... Even if you weren't directly affected by these; say, a friend of yours complain about her experiences with mistreatment and abuse, it can take a toll on you. Please, if you are in this kind of relationship and is constantly doing research about "what's wrong with you", then you need to leave in a smart and safe way. Gather all your stuff you can covertly, leave the country and seek professional help (therapist, counselor, professionals at womens shelters, etc.) once you have made it back to your home country. I am speaking out of my own witnessing accounts of other foreign and Turkish women and also my very own experience. My ex-husband was a soft-spoken man whom had been abused and witnessed abuse since he was a child. A lot of folks from Turkey grew up witnessing what we called abuse in the West and are in complete denial of these happenings all around them. Again, speaking from my own experience in Turkey, a lot of women have Stockholm Syndrome from generations of witnessing and going through abuse; a lot of the men were abused themselves as children or had witnessed their mothers' and sisters' beatings. These people are psychologically damaged and exhibit signs of sociopathic or psychopathic tendencies on a massive scale. This is not something that you, as a girlfriend or wife can change so let's be realistic here. If he ever neglected any part of your feelings or had ever made you think twice about "your faults" then this should be a warning sign to his lack of care for your emotional well-being. I understand that it is quite difficult to leave if you are living thru this in Turkey now but please, keep in touch with your friends back home, they can show you a different side of life and provide contrast. Here is a link to help you ladies to understand the psychology of abuse: http://safe-at-last.hubpages.com/hub/Signs-of-Domestic-Violence-Emotional-Abuse I pray for your safety and pray that you will be able to begin to shake off your traumatic experiences soon with professional help and in an environment of love and understanding. Again, you cannot change them, you have to make a change yourself and I hope that your choices are for the better. Submitting....
