Islam vs Islamism?

Due to the myriad pathological variants operative today, and most critically, due to the doctrinal orthodoxy implicit and explicit in the drivers governing groups like ISIS et al, 'Islamism' is, operatively speaking, a difference without salient distinction from 'Islam'.

In our reliance upon such terms as 'Islamism' I fear we risk getting lost in the semantics; just as we've gotten lost in misguided, self-defeating phrases like "War on Terror".
