I identify with a lot of your commentsReader comment on item: Advice to Non-Muslim Women against Marrying Muslim Men Submitted by dreams destroyed (United Kingdom), Jul 23, 2014 at 07:55 I identified with a lot of what you said in your post. I am similar to how you describe yourself and really thought I had found the one: having carefully considered all the factors. My husband and I live in the West, I gave up alcohol for him, not because he asked or insisted but out of respect for his religion. He didn't want me to become Muslim because he said he loved me as I was and that I was a respectful and conservative person anyway: as in I respected Islam, am faithful and loyal, dress age appropriately, am family orientated and culturally aware. So in short we respected each other and our religions/culture. However, after marriage and setting up home here in the UK I did see some signs of his Eastern views coming through, and his somewhat sexist and classist views. He too becomes defensive if someone disagrees with anything or does something he doesn't like and cannot have a simple discussion: he thinks a discussion or simple debate is a "clash" and is a bad sign for our relationship. We have only had 1 row in our whole 4 year marriage and now this has caused us to separate. Completely unhealthy. I think you can take someone out of their culture and they seem "Westernised" but you cannot take the culture out if them sufficiently to allow them to be flexible in their beliefs. I have found this to my cost and am now experiencing the worst heartache and pain I have ever felt in my entire life, and he was my soulmate and had some many wonderful qualities. I will miss him eternally. One thing did bother me about your post though and that was your comments on drinking. That is such a core prohibited activity in Islam and something you need to recognise and appreciate if you're going to commit to a Muslim. That doesn't mean you have to give up unless he tells you he can't handle you drinking but you need to understand that many people really object to their partners drinking around them. For a Muslim it is haram to even touch a glass with alcohol in it. Personally if you love someone there should always be compromise. For example I didn't drink but I did eat pork occasionally: we celebrated Xmas as well as Ramadan. It is an appreciated gesture if you give up one thing for your partner and them vice versa. It would be sad to lose someone just because you love drink more than you love them. I think you've done the right thing by walking away though as the other aspects such as children, country of residence etc are deal breakers. The heartache you would feel in divorce is far greater than breaking up now, trust me. I'm destroyed. Good luck and lots of love for your healing.
