If this is the explanation then how come la Ilah ila Allah is not written in vertical Arabic as

la

And yes early on Muslims were debating if Arabic should be written in vertical

I recall reading a study of Banners used by the Arabs at Siffin which is as early as we can get and Muhammad's flag was black without any inscriptions on it which means that these inscriptions are late and more so because there are two hamzas in the la Ilah ila Allah and the hamza was invented in the late second or even third century

I will try to find the above study and I will let you know
