Reply to sueReader comment on item: Advice to Non-Muslim Women against Marrying Muslim Men Submitted by Shelly (United States), Mar 18, 2014 at 10:26 Thank you sue. Little did I realize these differences until the engagement. I saw a few red flags prior, however, I was blinded, in love, failed to question them and ultimately ignored the red flags. With my previous relationship to a European guy who was not even born and raised in the US, didn't come here til he was 18, he was more open minded and did not want to change and control me. His family never thought their ways were better than american ways. They never looked down on others. We broke up amicably and are still friends. I assumed that since my arab ex was born and raised here and his family had been here for many decades that he would be even more open minded, maybe even more Americanized. Boy was I wrong. Ultimately, He was trying to mold me into someone else. Him and his family started to tell me how I need to change, how I need to act. I was starting to feel like a robot. I was starting to lose my identity. I was coming to the conclusion that my feelings would always come second to theirs. Their best interests were starting to come before mine and my fiance was letting it happen. It was all about them. They wanted me to be open minded and fit into their ways while they were going to stick to their ways. I can see that as more plausible if I lived in the ME. Even living in the states i didn't expect them to change. When we broke up I asked him why he doesn't just marry a ME girl. That's what his family wants apparently and he ultimately will he always obey their desires. He told me he doesn't want to marry a ME girl, which I do not understand at all to this day. Neuther him not his siblings had successful relationships with non arabs.. Hmmm I wonder why, lol. I lasted very long bc I'm apparently the most tolerant, easy going, open minded or maybe just more blinded. It think it was all of the above. Anyways, I am happy to say that I have moved on. I have found a guy who treats me so well, who cares about my feelings, who holds me in high regard, who places my feelings as a priority, who doesn't expect me to change. I'm not trying to encourage ppl to not date arabs. Although I do think there would be more difficulties in interracial relationships, especially if one person is not open minded. I'm just trying to say that if you feel something is not right, speak up. Let your feelings be heard. Do not change for someone else. Let them love you the way you are, the good and the bad. Listen to your gut, it's always right. Learn to love yourself, respect yourself above others. And btw, there are plenty of other fish out there.
