Brent Scowcroft is RightReader comment on item: Brent Scowcroft is Wrong: We Must Attack Saddam Submitted by M. Nicolas Firzli (France), Aug 24, 2002 at 08:50 Brent Scowcroft is rightly concerned about the shaky justifiability of an invasion of Iraq: there is no evidence that Iraq represents a threat to the United States or anybody else.Frankly, I wonder why George W. Bush focuses most of his time and energy on Iraq, a humble Middle-Eastern country smaller than Minnesota, at a time when the US economy is crumbling and its national security is tattered. According to official FBI figures, Sept. 11 terrorists came from several Middle Eastern and North African countries all of which are "allies of America", to use the words of Gulf War veteran Dick Cheney. But there wasn't a single Iraqi citizen among the World Trade Center kamikaze zealots. Iraq's only fault is its firm support for the Palestinian cause; this is the real reason rightwing US and Israeli pundits want to bomb Baghdad. These neoconservative thinkers usually accuse Europeans of supporting Saddam's regime; they clearly dislike the EU, an institution they often describe as "wobbly, unwilling to participate actively in the war against terror".
